True High School Sports Stories: ‘Crank That Diesel’

Most high school sports teams lack any real measurable home-field advantage. You can’t say that about this Louisiana team that ran on diesel.

The Trojans won back-to-back state championships in 1979 and 1980. Maybe it was then. Or maybe it was in the back-to-back state runner-up seasons that followed in 1981 and 1982.

Maybe it never really happened at all.

That’s what makes these stories so wonderful. One percent could be embellished, or 99 percent could be embellished.

I don’t care though.

This is one of the greatest home-field High School Sports environments anyone ever experienced.

Crank that diesel, son.

This High School Sports crowd was loaded up and truckin’ at all times

I am from Tallulah, a small town in North Louisiana. Played for the TA Trojans. We only had about 35 people on the varsity team. Everyone played both ways and on special teams. Most kids grew up on the farm. Town showed up to every game. We ran wing t and threw the ball maybe 1-2 times a game. Friday nights sound exactly like coffee town highlights. Absolutely love those videos.

I have a million stories but one year we were particularly good. The team motto became “crank that diesel” and every time we made a good run, play or big hit, players and fans would do the arm motion you do on interstate when you pass a big truck and want them to honk their horn.

By mid season, we took it up a notch and one of the farmers and team dads would drive his diesel truck onto the field in the corner of the end zone closest to the opposing team’s sideline. That’s where most of the dads and has been players would gather to watch the game (and drink booze). They’d crank that diesel and rev the engine when we ran through the bust through and then would blow the horn when we made a good play and the team would make the arm motions. It was incredible at the time. Could see it being a home field advantage for Coffeetown.

Keep putting out the content. Really do enjoy it and it brings back a lot of great memories growing up and playing sports in a small southern town.

Only a few high school athletes and teams and communities have a bunch of stars by their names.

But they all have stories, like Tallulah’s diesel truck.

Coffeetown’s where we share ’em.
