How did the Cuero High School Gobblers in Cuero, Texas get their incredible mascot name? Buckle up for this origin story, ya turkeys.
Cuero, Texas was a turkey processing town in the early 1900s.
This is where farmers would sell their turkeys, process them, and ship them out all over the country from the train station to Thanksgivings and Renaissance Festivals all over the country.
Many of the farmers lived outside of the booming metropolis.
At the time, owning a car was kind of like owning a Tesla. Not everyone had one. And even if they did, they didn’t have enough room to load up all the turkeys to go to town.
So they’d walk their birds from their farms like a big cattle drive. Except instead of cows, imagine a plumed army padding into Cuero and heading straight into someone’s deep frier a few days later.
Soon enough, tens of thousands of people were showing up to Cuero to watch the Turkey Trot.
This event eventually became known as an annual celebration called Turkeyfest, which still takes place today. They race turkeys and everything.
Cuero isn’t a huge turkey production town anymore, but they’ll always have the Gobblers.
These turkeys have multiple state championships to their name in multiple sports, and have a no-doubter of an all-star high school mascot.
Look at this thing. It is definitely raised with antibiotics and growth hormones. Cross the Gobbler at your own peril, bubba.
What an incredible way to pay tribute to a special American town.
