There are some weird and unique high school football mascot names across our great nation.
Plenty of schools go by the Eagles, the Tigers and the Panthers. Those are actually the most common mascots in the country, as I explained on this episode of Go Fight Win with Wes Blankenship.
That’s why I like to shine a spotlight on the mascots that you don’t see in every single town.
High school football mascots like the Goodrich Martians, for instance, are worth our attention.
Goodrich’s high school football mascot, instead, pays homage to Mars – the Roman god of war.
Mars isn’t just a savage warrior. He was also the guardian of agriculture, according to the Romans’ beliefs.
Goodrich has a rich agricultural history.
Its team name tips the cap to those who toiled in the fields at the early turn of the 20th century, not to aliens.
Goodrich used to be known as the Gladiators. While the alliteration is strong here, its decision to switch to the Martians (and an amazing helmet logo) remains strong.
They’re real protective over it.
If you read the Goodrich soccer team’s blog, you get a sense right away that they are not about this extraterrestrial comparison.
“‘Whether it’s explaining the Martian name or updating the curriculum, administration, staff, and students at Goodrich High School are all involved in the process of SETTING IT STRAIGHT!’,” the site says.
Look, Goodrich. You got a cool mascot. Don’t overplay your hand here.
Embrace the out-of-this-world kind of Martian while playing up the strong agricultural backbone of your community.
There’s no need to run from the alien association.
Even if we aren’t from your world, we come in peace.
