Coffeetown football already had a phenomenal chance to blow out the Holy Cloud Eagles.
Then the ‘Birds of Pray’ gave the Copperheads a sure-fire heap of motivation.
Holy Cloud brought an 0-4 record into its matchup with Coffeetown. Each loss came by an average of 28 points.
No one would blame the Christian Academy for calling upon the Almighty for some help.
Coffeetown’s players nearly laid hands on their opposition after the perceived slight. Cooler heads prevailed after team captain cornerback Biscuit Bryant held quarterback Reptile Henderson back in the coin toss.
“We just felt disrespected,” Henderson told me after the game.
“That Copperhead means everything to us. We felt like a disjointed team before this, but now we are galvanized.”
Holy Cloud certainly hoped to crush the snake in this ballgame. Any chance it had of that went right out the window with its unfortunate pregame oversight.
Lubbock Houston caught a 70-yard touchdown to go up 7-0 on Coffeetown’s first possession.
The Copperheads took a pick-six back on Holy Cloud’s first possession, and the rout was on.
“I’m proud of how our guys went from an adverse situation, and turned right around and kept their cool,” head coach Cliff Swansea said.
“Holy Cloud probably didn’t mean anything by it, I know their coach Isaac Zion is a humble guy. But that lack of attention to detail is what got em snake-bit tonight.”
Coffeetown plays Briarton next in a game that will decide the region.
The Copperheads are on an unbeaten tear since their first loss of the season, but Briarton is unblemished thus far on the season.
