‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot: What we Need to See

I’m told Universal TV has a bidding war going for a new Friday Night Lights reboot series with the original team of director Pete Berg, showrunner Jason Katims, and producer Brian Grazer all attached to return. They’ve talked before about getting the FNL gang back together, but this is a new project, TV only, and Katims is behind the pitch, according to two sources. It’ll be different characters but still set in the world of Texas high school football (maybe the QB1 will demand an N.I.L. deal?). Three bidders thus far, so let’s see if it lands at the home platform, Peacock, or if Netflix, which currently has the original series, or Amazon, or another platform, steps up.

If the series does get picked up, here’s what we need to see.

The Riggins Family

Spoiler alert: Tim Riggins and Tyra appeared to be headed for a happy ending when the original ‘Friday Night Lights’ series ended.

Riggins wanted the simple life. But you know he ain’t livin’ it in this universe or any other universe.

How many kids do Tim and Tyra have? Are they still together? Is he coaching little league football?

This potential storyline has the most intrigue for me.

Is Buddy Garrity Retired from the Auto Sales Business?

Imagine a retired Buddy Garrity with all that time on his hands.

No more college tuition or child support to worry about.

He’s just a High School Football Booster Program machine. Running the touchdown club. Buying influence to assist whoever is coaching whichever Dillon program he’s hitched his wagon to.

Bring back Buddy or we riot.

Sports Agent Jason Street Facilitating NIL Deals

Jason Street left a successful career out there on the field when he broke his neck.

His conception attempt storyline was weird, but the writers landed the plane by hinting Street could have another child on the way.

He already had a toddler the last time we saw him. Could Jason Street’s son be the next quarterback of the Dillon Panthers?

Is Street a successful sports agent now, with the ability to land massive NIL deals for hot-shot Texas High School Football players?

If you’re going to reboot this series and maintain a thread to the past, Jason Street could be a good entry point.

A Seasoned High School Football Radio Announcer in the Booth

The show needs a radio announcer with some passion. A lot of heart. Someone who has seen some things and won’t be surprised by whatever the writers cook up in the writers’ room or with AI.

Put me in, coach.
